BOSTON — Affiliated Managers Group, Inc. (NYSE: AMG) and Trilogy Global Advisors, LLC (“Trilogy”) have reached a definitive agreement for AMG to acquire a majority interest in Trilogy. After the closing of the transaction, the management partners of Trilogy will continue to hold a substantial portion of the equity of the business and direct its day-to-day operations.

Trilogy is a highly regarded investment manager specializing in emerging and global markets strategies, with approximately $12 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2010. Are you an astute Internet marketer who has been laboriously adding AdSense ads to all of your site pages, hoping that a small percentage of your site visitors will click and make you money? Perhaps you include a few affiliate banners and advertisements for your own products too.

AdSense and affiliate selling have been, and are still popular and many people claim to make excellent livelihoods from them. I’ve been selling other people’s stuff online since 1998 and have generated thousands of dollars income. My AdSense account provides a regular income, but nothing to write home about.

For those who might not be familiar with AdSense, it’s a Google program whereby you place Google advertisements aligned with your sites topic on your pages and, when people click on them, you earn Pay Per Click income.

Unfortunately, we Internet marketers cannot set up an income stream and sit back and just wait for it to continue earning income day after day. If for no other reason, the economic law of diminishing returns suggests that eventually we’ll reach an income peak and then our income will begin to drop off. When there are millions of html pages in cyberspace with AdSense adverts, the number of total clicks is distributed among a greater number of AdSense clients and therefore, many people get a little bit of income rather than a few people getting a huge income. (There are of course exceptions)

So, what’s the solution?

The solution is to diversify and be an early adopter of new technology and methods. By diversifying we can have some small assurance that while some income generating activities are running poorly, others will keep us going. By adopting new technology, we get in early on the first wave of interest from consumers. In some cases, where a multi-level marketing approach is used (unlike with AdSense), it’s possible to set up a comfortable residual income that continues flowing in well after the trend has become obsolete or less popular.

The newly emerging marketing technique called Pay Per Page (PPP) is tomorrow’s trend and an interesting change from Pay Per Click that requires a conscious action on behalf of a site visitor. With PPP people only have to visit a page for five seconds for site owners to earn money.

How does this work? Simple, website owners place a piece of Javascript on their pages and when someone visits a five second audio advertisement occurs. The audio is only heard once by a visitor. Unlike PPC, PPP does not require a visitor to do anything. A commission is paid for every visitor. Can you see how superior this method is to PPC where only a small percentage of people who visit click on an advertisement?

Another distinct benefit for early adopters is that this program, commencing soon, has a multi-tier payment structure whereby adopters can also receive a part commission based on what their sign-ups earn. Like all multi-level-marketing programs, if you get in on the ground floor, work hard to sign-up a few hundred people, you can generate some healthy income. There are literally thousands of exemplars pointing at the success of this type business model.

Needless to say, this evolving model will eventually succumb to the laws of diminishing returns too, but those of us who are early adopters will have a nice period of high earnings until the next whizz-bang marketing method arrives.

Report Finds Majority of Top 100 Online Retailers are Missing a Tremendous Opportunity to Capture Holiday and Special Event Market Share

PORTLAND, Maine — Today, RSR Research revealed the results of a benchmarking report entitled, “The Digital Divide: Digital Gifting Among Top Internet Retailers.” RSR analyzed the Internet Retailer Top 100, a list of the top 100 online retailers, and rated each on their digital gift card offering, using 20 critical criteria. The criteria focused on the comprehensiveness of the offering and the selection, purchase and recipient experience. The study focused on digital gift card purchases made in July 2010. CashStar, a market leading digital gifting and incentives company, sponsored the research.

Based on the evaluation criteria, the retailers with the highest overall scores and therefore the most comprehensive digital gift card offering are:

Unexpected Misses

Only 50 of the Top 100 Internet retailers offered digital gift cards. Of the 50 who did, there were some surprising misses. This was mostly from retailers whose digital gift card offering didn’t match their brand promise or who miss an opportunity because their younger, tech-savvy target audience is a natural fit for digital gift cards. The biggest digital gifting misses include:

“Gift cards are such an important retail staple, yet many retailers’ offerings have not evolved to keep up with the changing needs of today’s consumer. We were surprised that gift card offerings were often hard to find, difficult to navigate, and lacked follow-through for both the sender and the recipient,” said Nikki Baird, RSR Research analyst and co-author of the report. “This is an enormous missed opportunity for retailers, especially as we enter the most critical gifting season of the year.”

“With the holiday season fast approaching, retailers should look at every touch point of their online gift card experience through the eyes of their customers. There are so many areas along the purchase path where retailers have significant opportunity, which could result in money left on the table, as well as dissatisfied customers,” commented CashStar CEO David Stone. “Retailers simply cannot afford to miss this enormous and obvious gifting opportunity.”

Let’s start with a story:

Once upon a time, in the 1980’s, copywriter Gary Halbert wrote an ad for Entrepreneur magazine. The ad was for a business opportunity… and for some reason… Halbert put a bullet point in the ad that said:

* Fake cocaine: A legal substitute that fools even the experts!

For the record, this business opportunity was not being promoted by the Mafia… and… strangely enough… had nothing to do with the narcotics industry.

But… get this: People called for years after the ad ran… trying to find out about the “fake cocaine”.

Hmn!

What’s the lesson here?

Simply this:

The most POWERFUL human emotion you can tap into is CURIOSITY!

And, Good Sirs and Fair Maidens, one of the very best ways to drive your reader wild with curiosity… is to load your sales message with… and apply… an orgy of bullet points!

More often than not, the most insanely profitable sales letters, ads and web sites are laced with a HUGE list of ultra-compelling, benefit-driven bullet points.

And, in case you’re not sure what a bullet point is, let me explain:

A bullet point is a block of words (copy) that offers a compelling benefit or “secret knowledge” to the reader. They are called bullets because they are usually preceded by a little round dot that looks like a bullet hole. Just like this:

*

Although a round dot (like above) is the most common symbol used for bullets, you can also use check marks, arrows, numbers, letters… and… anything else that draws attention to the point you are about to make.

Speaking of which, the most powerful bullets apply what I like to call: “The Teaser Torture Treatment”. That’s to say, they’re loaded with a healthy dose of curiosity and reward!

Perhaps the best thing for me to do to help you “get this”, is to open fire with a list of bullets from my “private” swipe file.

Check out the bullet points below, and see if you can grasp just how POWERFUL a properly constructed bullet can be (Note: all of the following bullets were written by copywriter John Carlton… because… hardly anyone can touch him when it comes to “bulletizing”):

* How to control the RPMs of your ball’s spin with pinpoint accuracy! (So instantly accurate, you’ll be able to practice with your 8-iron in your living room… and never hit a lamp or knock a picture off the wall!)
