Welcome back to our short series on RSS Feed Submission and Syndication for the new comer. In today’s article I’m going to briefly discuss a little bit of the history behind the RSS Feed system. It all started in 1997 when a guy by the name of David Winer who owned userland.com thought of and started the original format. Of course, in it’s infancy it was called “scriptingNews” as it wasn’t yet RSS. However Dan Libby of Netscape designed the first version of RSS but it was all done of Winer’s initial work with “scriptingNews.” It allowed Netscape’s web site to automatically add news from all over the web to their site automatically. The original concept was to publish headlines so that Netscape’s viewers could simply click for more information and go right to the original publishing site. This first official form of RSS was number 0.90 but nobody has yet to be able to come up with a solid answer as to why it stated with such an odd number.

RSS is now known as “Really Simple Syndication” but at that time it stood for RDF Site Summary. Of course, just to confuse people RSS is an acronym inside an acronym because why make anything simple right? The RDF in RDF Site Summary stands for Resource Description Framework. To really get a better understanding of RDF a great starting point is to look at HTML which is the more universally understood language. HTML uses a variety of tags to format the text and tell your web browser how to display information. However, you can only use tags that the HTML developers designed into the system to begin with. XML looks a lot like HTML because the tags are in angled brackets but in XML you can make up your own tags. Using those tags you can define objects of the structure of the information. RDF takes advantage of that.

And now you should know a little bit about how RSS got started. It was a simple concept that was then improved upon, and it was used then much as it is used today - to syndicate information from one web site to another.

One method of learning and practicing your copywriting skills is through affiliate marketing.

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is simply the process of selling products for someone else, and taking a share of the sales price.

You can see this in action by typing a popular search term, like “guitar lesson” into Google. When you do this, you will see ads on the right side of the screen. Someone has paid the the placement of each of those ads, and while many use this method to sell their own products, some use it as affiliates.

There are many ways to sell as an affiliate; here is how a typical setup would work for the products you see advertised on the right side of Google.

If you click on an ad link, the seller is charged for that click. The seller will typically do one of two different things. First, they may send you to a web page where they will sell you on a product they are promoting for someone else, and try to get you to click on a link to a checkout page. Second, the smart ones will send you to a page and try and persuade you to sign up for an email list, and then they will sell you on the product via email.

If someone buys through your link, you get paid! You can therefore learn by doing. Just make sure that you understand enough about Google AdWords that you do not spend too much for the clicks.

You might be wondering… what does any of this do with copywriting?

Answer: almost all of it!

The Google ads require good copy in order to get interested readers to click through. Similarly, excellent copy is needed to persuade readers to click through to view the seller’s sales page, and to get the reader to sign up for your email list (if you have one).

By proper tracking your results, you will learn which copy performs better; and if you are applying what you learn, you will become a better copywriter.

There has been a lot of discussion lately about organic search results. What are organic search results? Simply put, they are naturally occurring, nonpaid listings that you would find on Google or Yahoo when doing a search. They are gathered by the aforementioned search engines as they crawl the internet cataloging new sites and detecting changes to previously indexed web sites.

Although organic search results are important, they often take longer to materialize than do Pay Per Click (PPC) search engine results that are found on Google and Yahoo. These paid listings have a direct relationship with many other search engines that will take the paid results from Google or Yahoo and use them in their own results. You see, you are getting much more than just paid listings on Google. You are feeding other engines that will eventually increase your web presence and ranking.

For example, while Google supplies Netscape and AOL with primary unpaid search results as well as paid search results, it also supplies paid search results to IWON.com and ASK.com. Pay Per Click is generating twice the exposure and that exposure will lead to an increase in organic rankings.

Now let us take a look at Yahoo. It feeds paid and organic results to alltheweb.com, Lycos, and AltaVista. Although it would seem logical that Google would merit a large chunk of a web sites PPC budget due to the fact that Google supplies paid results to twice the search engines than it does organic results, that is not the only reason. Google represents over 80% of all search engine traffic and this alone should warrant doing business with them but this in way means using Google instead of Yahoo.

Yahoo has 2.4 billion searches conducted on its web site every month and 47 million people use Yahoo every day. This is no small number and even though it is not as strong a competitor as Google, it should be receive a portion of your marketing budget. As a general rule of thumb, ad dollars that are spent on Pay Per Click Advertising should be divided between Google with 60% going toward Google AdWords and 40% toward Yahoo Search Marketing.

A strategy for success should include PPC as well as organic SEO. The idea is to generate leads and convert those leads to sales. As business men and women, we must leave no stone unturned.

New program easily converts RSS feeds into html content that webmasters can add to their websites to provide fresh content to their visitors.

(PRWEB) April 7, 2005 — Webmasters — Using RSS feeds to give your website fresh, changing content is one of the hottest techniques top marketers are using today. Until now, using RSS feeds properly was time consuming and difficult. A new program called RSS Content Builder is now available to help webmasters easily use RSS feeds to increase their search engine ranking.

RSS feeds are an amazing free tool that allows any webmaster to syndicate news, articles or entertainment directly onto their own site. Top names like Yahoo!, Reuters, the New York Times and CNN offer RSS feeds webmasters to use. That means, without writing a single word, websites can offer visitors fresh, relevant content every day.

RSS feeds can also play another important role for website owners. With the proper scripting, RSS feeds will be read by the search engines as YOUR content. More relevant content means a higher rating with the search engines. However, most feeds are created in javascript which is unreadable by the search engines. Codes must be converted to php to be read by search engines. This time consuming process also requires programming knowledge.

Another obstacle to benefiting from RSS feeds is that search engines will actually penalize websites for having duplicate content from other websites. It would seem that using RSS feeds for search engine optimization is too difficult for the average webmaster, until now.

With new programs available, anyone can get the full benefits of using RSS feeds, even if they arent programmers. T. Pishchik of www.abat.com says about the program he uses “I’ve been using static pages for years. Now with RSS Content Builder I can put fresh content on my site automatically without doing any work. The installation process is as easy as 1-2-3 and took only few minutes.”
Michelle Timothy, the creator of RSS Content Builder, was also using RSS feeds for her websites, but finding the process time consuming and complicated. She says I wanted something easier to use. I wanted the option to customize the look of the feeds, to stop customers from leaving my site when they clicked on a feed, and of course, to make it search engine friendly with a lot less work".

Michelles program, RSS Content Builder, is now available to webmasters. You can find more information about the benefits of using RSS feeds and sign up for the free version at http://rsscontentbuilder.com.
